Baleia Wines & Olive Oil in Riversdale (Olives, Wine Tasting, Joubert Family, Dassieklip, La Bella Deli, N2 outside Riversdale, Wyne en Olywe, Suid Kaap, Wynproe, What to do, What to See)

Along the Cape South Coast, in a recently established wine making area and near the small town Vermaaklikheid, the Joubert family proudly produced their very first Baleia Bay wine. The farm Dassieklip is home to the Baleia Bay vineyards – and was specifically selected for the vineyards because of its limestone rich soil and close proximity to the ocean. A delicate sea breeze regularly sweeps over the vineyards, cooling them down to an ideal temperature for growing the perfect grapes to produce truly great wines. The vines are respectfully grown on limestone rich soil and each vine is delicately handled by caring female hands. This ensures that each bottle of Baleia Bay is testimony to our passion for a superbly crafted wine.

In 2009, after careful consideration and calculation, we planted our first block of Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Tempranillo. Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay followed soon after. During this exciting period we’ve learnt many a valuable lesson, and have come to the conclusion that the terroir of these extraordinary vineyards offers the perfect conditions for the cultivation of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Having realised this, we decided to expand on these respective cultivars in 2011 and we planted additional Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vineyards.

After our first harvest in 2011, we needed a name for our wines – and we suitably came up with Baleia Bay. It was inspired by the Portuguese word for whale (Baleia) and it is directly related to our farm being a stone’s throw away from St Sebastian Bay which is known as the whale nursery of South Africa due to the record number of Southern Right whales that migrate here annually. It is also the best land vantage point from which you can view the magnificent 58 ton gentle giants of the sea.

Pinot Noir 2012 – RECM Best Value en Bronze Veritas

Chardonnay 2013 all sold out and are now busy with the Chardonnay 2014 wooded.
